NB psychiatric hospital patient dies days after report finding inadequate care

CAMPBELLTON, N.B. — A patient died unexpectedly at a psychiatric hospital in Campbellton, N.B., this weekend, two days after the province’s ombudsman released a report probing complaints of mistreatment at the centre.

Vitale Health Network says staff at Restigouche Hospital Centre became aware of the death on Saturday morning.

It says the network has launched an investigation “to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the death.”

Health Minister Ted Flemming says the RCMP and the coroner are also investigating the patient’s death.

He notes “that there is increased focus on the hospital given the systemic issues found by the ombud.”

A Feb. 7 report from New Brunswick ombudsman Charles Murray says his office believes “that in multiple cases there has been significant mistreatment of RHC patients.”

The report says there is an “ongoing safety risk” both to patients and staff, and claims the centre is not providing adequate care to patients.
